Iowa National Guard Airman Dies in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (KTIV) –

A member of Sioux City's 185th Air Refueling wing drowned at a beach in Puerto Rico.
Police say 49-year-old Cory Mildenstein, of Sioux City, was swimming at Surfer Beach in Aguadilla late Wednesday when a co-worker noticed Mildenstein being dragged by the current.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman says a rescue swimmer gave Mildenstein CPR, but he was declared dead a short time later at a hospital. The beach is known for its heavy currents and the National Weather Service had issued a high surf advisory.

Mildenstein was a member of the Civil Engineering Squadron in the 185th. He was born in Cherokee, Iowa and graduated from Sioux City East.

The family of Staff Sgt. Cory A. Mildenstein issued the following statement:

"Cory always had a smile on his face and space in his heart for everyone. He was very proud of his children Amber, April and Zac. He loved spending time with family and friends and he was always willing to help with a home repair, or car project."
