EVENT: Iowa City Senior Center "Skittles for Soldiers"

The Senior Center's readers' theatre group, Senior Standing Room Only (SSRO), will present readings and songs to honor our veterans in a new show, "Call to Honor." SSRO will perform on Wednesday, November 9 at 2 PM in the Senior Center Assembly Room. The event is free and open to the general public.

Attendees are encouraged to wear their red, white, and blue, and expect plenty of audience participation. Refreshments and conversation will be offered after the show.

This event will mark the kick-off of the Senior Center's "Skittles for Soldiers" charitable candy drive. The Center will collect donations of candy between November 9th and 18th, in partnership with the Iowa Troop Pantry, to send to active troops. The Senior Center will be the main collection site for the candy drive, but volunteers will also be stationed at local grocery stores on November 11 and 12 to encourage donations.

Acceptable donations include:
  • Non-chocolate packaged candies such as Skittles, Nerds, Twizzlers, Hot Tamales, Laffy Taffy, chewing gum, gummy bears, jelly beans, and hard candy
  • M&M's, Tootsie Rolls, and chocolate raisins
  • Pre-packaged trail mix, nuts, and dried fruits

The Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center is located in downtown Iowa City at 28 South Linn Street. For more information, call the Senior Center at 319-356-5220, or visit The Center's website at
